Message much blow-through of the cylinder during valve overlap. This blow through carries fuel right through the chamber and into the exhaust manifold, which affects the mixture within the cylinder - making it leaner and providing less fuel for combustion; hence, the lag in throttle response. With a variable backpressure setup, you can overcome this rather easily.
